WINNERS SELECTED FOR US BOWLER WRITING HONORS

ARLINGTON, Texas – The winners in the four categories of the 2009 US Bowler Writing Competition have been determined.

For the 58th annual contest, winners were selected in news, editorial, feature and photography categories. Submissions for the contest had to have been published between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2009, and materials that appeared in US Bowler, US Youth Bowler or on BOWL.com were not eligible.

Ten winners were selected in the Feature category. To be considered for the feature category, the story had to be a non-fiction story concerning any individual, facility, equipment or organization related to tenpin bowling involvement. The winners, in alphabetical order:

  • Johnny Campos, Peoria (Ill.) Journal Star
  • Jim Dressel, Bowlers Journal International
  • Michael Foreman, Bowling Center Management Magazine

  • Bill Ryan, The Sentinel-Tribune, Bowling Green, Ohio
  • Lydia Rypcinski, International Bowling Industry
  • Susan Schrock, Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram
  • Daniel P. Smith, Pro Shop Operator Magazine

Ten winners also were selected in the Editorial category. The category is for any story or column for which an opinion is expressed in the media concerning a tenpin bowling-related subject. The winners, in alphabetical order:

Five winners were selected in the News category. The category is for stories written under deadline pressure with proof of following day publication. The winners, in alphabetical order:

  • Lydia Rypcinski, Chicago Sun-Times

Stan Godlewski and Sam Carleton were selected the winners in the Photography category for their work in Pro Shop Operator Magazine.
